Hip-Hop Around the Globe

The purpose of this workshop is to provide students with a global perspective by using examples of the impact of Hip-Hop around the world.

21st Century Skills Covered:
Global Awareness, Teamwork Skills, Communication Skills, Literacy Skills

The students are first divided into groups. 
Each group is provided information about a certain country, and an article about Hip-Hop artists from their assigned country.  The teams work together to prepare a presentation about their country and the influence of Hip-Hop within their assigned country.  Once the presentations have been completed, the students watch the music videos associated with the Hip-Hop artists from their designated countries.



Entrepreneurship and Hip-Hop

The purpose of this workshop is to expose students to the tenets of entrepreneurshipby using examples of how Hip-Hop moguls have used entrepreneurship to extend their brands, and increase their wealth.

The students first read business articles about the entrepreneurial endeavors of Hip-Hop moguls.  The students are then divided into teams.  Each team must generate an idea for a business, identifying the target market for the business and other pertinent information.  The teams then create marketing materials, and draft commercials for their businesses.  At the end of the workshop the teams present both their marketing materials and their live commercials.



Net Work

The purpose of the game Net Workis to provide a creative and challenging mediumto teach the importance of networkingand effective networking techniques.

Career Skills

After playing the game Net Work
students participate in an elevator pitch activity that teaches them how to approach people who can help them achieve their goals, and how to succinctly communicate their goals and objectives.



Global Grocery Shopping

The purpose of this workshop is to strengthen the money counting management skills, and teamwork skills of elementary school students in grades K-6.  The students also learn how to calculate global exchange rates.

The students are first divided into groups and given a certain amount of money
and a grocery shopping list.  As a team, the students must determine how many of the items on the list they can purchase with the money allotted to them, and then proceed to ‘check-out.’  Next, the teams will return to their “plane” so they can travel to their assigned nation and exchange their money for purchases in their designated countries.  This activity not only strengthens students’ counting and teamwork skills, it forces the children to think globally, and consider life outside of their neighborhood, city, state, and country.



Public Speaking:  Music with Positive Messages

The purpose of this workshop is to teach the importance of public speaking and the skills required of a good orator.

21st Century Skills Covered:
Creativity, Critical Thinking, Communication Skills

The students first listen to music that provides messages
that promote goal achievement and success.  After listening to a variety of songs, the students document their reactions to the songs of their choice using either written or visual responses.  Once the students finish preparing their visual or written presentation they present their responses to their peers and other workshop attendees.
